I later became acting principal at 26 years old - one of the youngest in the entire state. Lowering Our Taxes and Growing Our Economy

Extremist Republicans are completely misaligned with the values of our district. Our current State Senator, Ryan Fazio, tried to defeat the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act, a bill to further protect <a href="https://greenwichfreepress.com/letter-to-the-editor/letter-fazio-cant-be-trusted-with-our-reproductive-healthcare-188993/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">women’s reproductive rights</a>. He has called Roe v. Wade and Obergefell v. Hodges <a href="https://thefederalist.com/2018/12/12/now-supreme-court-isnt-puppet-liberals-want-destroy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">offensive to the rule of law</a>. He also directly increased the threat of gun violence by voting against <a href="https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/opinion/article/opinion-sen-fazio-failed-constituents-on-gun-18142208.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Governor Lamont’s comprehensive gun safety law</a>.Nick will always fight to protect reproductive rights and keep our communities safe from gun violence. This year, the U.S. Attorney General declared gun violence a national health crisis. We cannot afford to send legislators to Hartford who do not take gun violence seriously. By enacting strong, common sense legislation, we can save lives.&nbsp;Nick was proud to work in the Lamont administration when the Governor introduced and signed a bill into law that enacted some of the most effective gun regulations in the country. Senator Fazio voted against this <a href="https://apnews.com/article/connecticut-gun-control-law-sandy-hook-3b92ea0755863f2b2d32a45948eb6a70" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">comprehensive gun safety law</a>. By opposing a bill that bans assault weapons and strengthens firearm purchase safety standards, Senator Fazio made us all less safe.&nbsp;<h3>(2) WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS</h3>The overwhelming <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/religious-landscape-study/database/compare/views-about-abortion/by/party-affiliation/among/state/connecticut/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">majority of Connecticut voters</a> believe in a woman’s right to choose. Bodily autonomy is on the ballot, and it’s time for leadership that reflects these values.&nbsp;Nick’s opponent, Ryan Fazio, voted against the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act, a bill to further <a href="https://greenwichfreepress.com/letter-to-the-editor/letter-fazio-cant-be-trusted-with-our-reproductive-healthcare-188993/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">protect women’s reproductive rights</a>. This vote was an abandonment of our core values. We can’t send anti-choice politicians like Senator Fazio to Hartford.<h3>(3) LGBTQ+ RIGHTS</h3>The 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling guaranteed the fundamental right of marriage to same-sex couples. Senator Ryan Fazio called this ruling “<a href="https://thefederalist.com/2018/12/12/now-supreme-court-isnt-puppet-liberals-want-destroy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">offensive to the rule of law.</a>” Our district deserves better—we need a leader who deeply values our LGBTQ+ community. Nick supports comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation, ensuring equal rights in employment, housing, and public services. He also advocates for access to affirming healthcare, inclusive education policies, and mental health resources tailored to the LGBTQ+ community. We must all ensure that every LGBTQ+ resident feels valued, respected, and empowered to live their lives without fear of discrimination or harm.

Nick will always fight to protect reproductive rights and keep our communities safe from gun violence. There is no room for cheap political points when the stakes are this high.

Fighting Back Against Extremism

As a former teacher and principal, Nick understands the critical role well-resourced schools and teachers play in the success of our community. As State Senator, he will invest in education through school renovations, expanded learning opportunities both in the classroom and outside the classroom, mental health support, and better compensation for educators.&nbsp;Nick also knows that a high quality education system is critical to a strong workforce and economic prosperity. In 2020, as a member of the Lamont administration, Nick led the creation of Connecticut’s Office of Workforce Strategy that supports students and job seekers in finding high-quality jobs. It’s important we update curricula to meet job market demands, linking K-12 and higher education systems with job training programs.&nbsp;But educating our workforce itself is not enough—we must also support our community members after they enter the workforce. Over 50% of Connecticut's workers are parents, but <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/child-care-crisis-keeping-women-workforce/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">young mothers often leave the workforce due to unaffordable childcare</a>. Nick will advocate for universal access to quality summer and afterschool learning opportunities for every student in Connecticut.We must do more as a community to support our young people with their mental health needs. In our district, Students are struggling with <a href="https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/childrens-mental-health-in-connecticut-18096928.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">increasing rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues</a>. Schools often lack the necessary resources and trained personnel to provide adequate support. As a result, students' academic performance and overall well-being suffer. Addressing this crisis requires improved mental health education and ensuring students have access to the care they need. By prioritizing mental health education, we can create a healthier, more supportive environment for all students.<h3>(2) Workforce</h3>In 2020, Nick led the effort from the Governor’s Office to create Connecticut’s Office of Workforce Strategy which provides critical resources to students and job seekers pursuing high quality employment. He has the experience to grow our economy, create more jobs, and invest in the future of our workforce.&nbsp;Our district must rapidly adapt our curricula to reflect the evolving job market demands. We can address these issues by better connecting our K-12 and higher education systems, which are currently disjointed and disconnected. Nick’s plans include linking post-secondary education and job training programs, providing students with a head start on for-credit courses and workforce certificates in critical sectors.<h3>(3) Childcare</h3>Accessible childcare is critical infrastructure for parents to get back to work and facilitate the growth of our economy. Over 50% of workers in Connecticut are parents, and there is a <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/child-care-crisis-keeping-women-workforce/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">significant drop-off in the labor force participation rate of young mothers </a>who would like to work but lack access to affordable childcare.&nbsp;Connecticut could make great strides in filling its 100,000 vacant jobs if we provided greater access to high-quality childcare. State spending on childcare generates a strong return on investment for our economy. Nick will advocate in the State Senate for these programs.

Investing in Education and Our Workforce

Our district pays significantly more in taxes to Hartford than we get back. For the past three years, we have sent a Republican to Hartford who focused on an extremist agenda instead of advocating for more funding for our district. Meanwhile, I-95 remains<a href="https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/ct-i95-merritt-rank-top-10-congested-corridors-usa-17744206.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> the most congested highway in America</a>, we have several crumbling schools, and Metro-North remains unacceptably slow and inefficient.&nbsp;Quality infrastructure is the cornerstone of a thriving community, and we deserve better. We’ve seen the progress that Democrats in the House can bring to our district. Now more than ever, we need new leadership in the State Senate focused on bringing investments back to our towns.&nbsp;Nick is committed to leading Greenwich, Stamford, and New Canaan into the 21st century—without tolls or unnecessary burdens on taxpayers.&nbsp;<h3>(1) FIXING I-95 AND METRO-NORTH</h3>The Greenwich-Norwalk corridor is the busiest transportation zone in the state, yet 70% of CT Department of Transportation (CTDOT) funds are allocated outside our corridor. We must direct more state investments to our region.&nbsp;The highest return on investment for our infrastructure would be to reduce I-95 traffic and to make Metro-North faster and more efficient. To achieve this, Nick will be a champion in the State Senate to secure the state funds we need and to prioritize our transportation projects in the CTDOT budget.<h3>(2) MODERNIZING OUR SCHOOLS</h3>Many of our schools, including Central Middle School, Old Greenwich School, Riverside School, and North Mianus School should have been rebuilt years ago. However, the dysfunction of right-wing Republicans has delayed these projects, and our children have paid the price.&nbsp;Nick understands the process of securing more state funding through the school construction fund and its reimbursement process. This past legislative session, he worked with Greenwich Democrats to help them understand the reimbursement process and secure more state funding for Central Middle School, leading to an <a href="https://www.greenwichtime.com/news/article/greenwich-central-middle-school-reimbursement-19450741.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">additional $22M for our community</a>. These renovations will improve security, accommodate more students, and help to meet ADA requirements.&nbsp;As State Senator, Nick will work with our local Boards of Education to advocate on their behalf in Hartford and bring critical investments back to our district.&nbsp;<h3>(3) LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE</h3>Climate change poses a severe threat to Connecticut’s coastline. In Old Greenwich alone, nearly <a href="https://circa.uconn.edu/sea-level-rise-and-storm-surge-viewer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">50% of properties face flood risk</a>. Immediate action is essential to bolster our community’s resilience against climate change.Our district requires substantial state and federal funding for climate adaptation projects. Nick will work tirelessly to secure the necessary resources to improve flood defenses, from enhancing drainage systems and reinforcing seawalls to promoting sustainable urban planning that effectively reduces flood risks.

Quality infrastructure is the cornerstone of a thriving community, and we deserve better. Nick is committed to leading Greenwich, Stamford, and New Canaan into the 21st century—without tolls or unnecessary burdens on taxpayers.

Securing More Funding for Our District

<a href="/five-point-housing-plan" target="" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Read Nick's 5-point plan on housing here.</a>Nick believes that communities should have the autonomy to make their own housing decisions through local zoning. He will be a champion in the State Senate to protect local control for our towns.State housing policy works best when policymakers support towns through carrots, not sticks and when decisions are made bottoms-up not top-down. Nick was Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Lamont when the administration secured $800 million in new funding to support building new housing across the state. Funding like this paired with support from the Connecticut Department of Housing is exactly the kind of collaborative approach the state should be taking to help towns meet their housing goals.&nbsp;Nick will be an ally to our municipal leaders, advocating for their respective housing plans. It is the role of state leaders to champion the housing visions of our towns rather than impose top-down policies that result in overdevelopment.Nick believes that <a href="https://www.greenwichct.gov/1854/Affordable-Housing-Units-CT-Gen-Statute-" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Section 8-30g of the CT General Statutes</a> has failed and resulted in developers being able to construct large apartment complexes without sufficient town input and collaboration. He advocates for amending 8-30g to facilitate a more cooperative process that aligns with the specific needs of towns.As State Senator, Nick will support the execution and implementation of Greenwich’s Affordable Housing Plan, which aligns with Nick’s vision for our district. This includes balancing new development with sustainability, managing infrastructure issues like aging sewers and traffic congestion, and protecting open spaces and historic districts. Bringing together public and private organizations, as well as ensuring public engagement, are critical to the housing decision-making process.

Local Control Over Zoning and Housing

Climate change presents a significant threat to our towns. <a href="https://riskfactor.com/city/old-greenwich-ct/956900_fsid/flood" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Nearly half</a> of all the homes in Old Greenwich, Tod’s Point and Byram are at risk for severe flooding. Leaders must find solutions to protect our communities and coastline. This will require tens of millions of dollars to safeguard our coastline and critical infrastructure from severe weather and flooding.&nbsp;<img src="https://run.imgix.net/31459826-b903-4426-9c46-d6466b48693b/f38faf6a-99db-4d24-bcb4-e1ec845f9b6e/f38faf6a-99db-4d24-bcb4-e1ec845f9b6e.png?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=5&amp;con=10&amp;sat=28&amp;high=-30&amp;shad=16&amp;usm=20&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C1199%2C634&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="center" alignwidth="45" variant="base">But shoring up our defenses against climate change won’t be enough. We need to actively reduce carbon emissions via smart energy solutions that can grow our economy and lower costs for consumers. Nick understands Connecticut’s potential to be a leader in the global shift toward a clean energy economy. Nick will support bills to fund and expand programs for new police officers while also providing grants to a greater number of prospective cadets. He will also make sure that police receive the benefits they deserve—better pay, adequate healthcare, and improved working conditions. <h3>(2) FIREFIGHTERS</h3>Our district’s firefighters are under-equipped and under-resourced. <a href="https://turnto10.com/news/local/fire-east-greenwich-condo-building-ladder-trucks-equipment-safety-resources" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">This has resulted in dangerous conditions for firefighters and community members alike.</a> Nick will work to provide firefighters with state-of-the-art equipment, including expediting <a href="https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/greenwich-fire-truck-rtm-18442480.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the replacement of our aging ladder trucks</a>. He will also work with firefighters to address staffing shortages by improving recruitment and retention.&nbsp; Nick was also proud to be part of the Lamont administration when the Governor signed a bill banning the use of PFAS-containing firefighting foam. The administration also drafted a bill that expanded a 2019 law that expanded PTSD coverage for frontline workers and passed a groundbreaking law that makes it easier for firefighters with cancer to receive workers’ compensation. As State Senator, Nick will support legislation that improves the safety and mental health of our first responders.&nbsp;

It's clear that our community is facing a real problem with energy costs.That's why we developed our Connecticut Energy Cost Reduction Plan. It's directly informed by what we've heard from you, and it’s designed to relieve the burden on you and your families when you’re paying your bills each month.&nbsp;People in Connecticut tell me they thought we had better safeguards. They thought someone was supposed to be making sure that we wouldn’t be blindsided by cost increases. But here we are, with families struggling to balance enjoying life with keeping the lights on. That's not acceptable.And it’s not just individuals feeling the squeeze. Small businesses are struggling with these unpredictable costs that make planning a nightmare. This isn’t just inconvenient; it's unsustainable.While putting together this plan, it became even clearer with every headline—our current energy policies do not meet the needs of our community. They’re failing us. And our families and our businesses are paying the price.The 2017-2019 Millstone Agreement was a Republican-led bipartisan effort to keep the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in operation.&nbsp;We need leaders capable of navigating complex agreements to secure deals that genuinely benefit our state.&nbsp;I am prepared to lead these discussions and ensure our energy agreements are both fair and advantageous for Connecticut residents.Here’s what we need to do:<ol><li>Cap Energy Costs Through Fair Agreements Advocate for caps on energy costs by ensuring state-negotiated electricity contracts are limited to reasonable rates—no more than 150% above competitive market prices. This will prevent overpaying for electricity sourced through specific state contracts, protecting families and businesses from inflated costs. Connecticut must move beyond agreements like the Millstone Agreement by securing deals that are truly advantageous for our residents.&nbsp;</li><li>Lobby for Federal Support and Funding It’s time to start lobbying the federal government for increased support and funding for Connecticut’s energy sector, particularly targeting grants from programs like the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and CHIPS Act. Currently, the Northeast is underserved by these federal initiatives, receiving little funding for energy transition programs. We will advocate for a greater focus on reducing energy prices, given that Connecticut has some of the highest rates in the nation.</li><li>Incentivize a Competitive Energy Market Encourage a competitive energy market by advocating for a comprehensive energy strategy that includes all available energy sources. This involves treating all zero-carbon energy sources—like wind, solar, hydropower, and nuclear—equally, ensuring fair treatment and efficient allocation of subsidies. Streamlining regulatory processes and supporting infrastructure development will further enhance competition, reduce costs, and provide reliable 24/7 energy solutions for the future.</li><li>Hold Utilities and Regulators Accountable Implement stronger oversight and accountability measures for utility companies to ensure fair pricing and service. This includes monitoring utility practices, scrutinizing rate increases, and demanding transparency in their cost structures. We will push for utility companies to justify their pricing strategies and align them with the best interests of Connecticut residents and businesses, avoiding unnecessary financial burdens on our community. And we have to hold regulators accountable as well. These hikes could have been prevented had the regulators denied the request to extend the moratorium over ten months.</li><li>Embrace Regional Cooperation to Strengthen Negotiation Power Connecticut is stronger when we stand with our neighbors. By forming a regional coalition with neighboring states we can negotiate better energy contracts and secure deals that benefit all our residents. We need leaders who can navigate complex agreements and advocate for Connecticut’s interests. With my background in business and negotiation, I am ready to lead these discussions.</li></ol>

Our district pays significantly more in taxes to Hartford than we get back. For the past three years, we have sent a Republican to Hartford who focused on an extremist agenda instead of advocating for more funding for our district. Meanwhile, I-95 remains<a href="https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/ct-i95-merritt-rank-top-10-congested-corridors-usa-17744206.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> the most congested highway in America</a>, we have several crumbling schools, and Metro-North remains unacceptably slow and inefficient.&nbsp; Quality infrastructure is the cornerstone of a thriving community, and we deserve better. We’ve seen the progress that Democrats in the House can bring to our district. Now more than ever, we need new leadership in the State Senate focused on bringing investments back to our towns.&nbsp; Nick is committed to leading Greenwich, Stamford, and New Canaan into the 21st century—without tolls or unnecessary burdens on taxpayers.&nbsp; <h3>(1) FIXING I-95 AND METRO-NORTH</h3>The Greenwich-Norwalk corridor is the busiest transportation zone in the state, yet 70% of CT Department of Transportation (CTDOT) funds are allocated outside our corridor. We must direct more state investments to our region.&nbsp; The highest return on investment for our infrastructure would be to reduce I-95 traffic and to make Metro-North faster and more efficient. To achieve this, Nick will be a champion in the State Senate to secure the state funds we need and to prioritize our transportation projects in the CTDOT budget. <h3>(2) MODERNIZING OUR SCHOOLS</h3>Many of our schools, including Central Middle School, Old Greenwich School, Riverside School, and North Mianus School should have been rebuilt years ago. However, the dysfunction of right-wing Republicans has delayed these projects, and our children have paid the price.&nbsp;Nick understands the process of securing more state funding through the school construction fund and its reimbursement process. This past legislative session, he worked with Greenwich Democrats to help them understand the reimbursement process and secure more state funding for Central Middle School, leading to an <a href="https://www.greenwichtime.com/news/article/greenwich-central-middle-school-reimbursement-19450741.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">additional $22M for our community</a>. Immediate action is essential to bolster our community’s resilience against climate change.Our district requires substantial state and federal funding for climate adaptation projects. That customers could see their residential electricity bills rise by 30%—an unacceptable and, for many, unmanageable increase is alarming. It is my understanding that these charges are the result of PURA failing to collect $265 million in federally-mandated fees last year.I am writing with an unequivocal message: residents shouldn’t bear the burden of these surcharges. As a former teacher and principal, Nick understands the critical role well-resourced schools and teachers play in the success of our community. August 12, 2024Today, Nick Simmons, candidate for CT-36 State Senate seat, announced a five-point plan to improve Connecticut’s housing laws. This includes amending 8-30g to allow for greater community input, advocating for more state funds, lowering development costs, and streamlining approval processes. Most importantly, Simmons believes that fixing the housing issues requires empowering local towns and cities to achieve their individual housing goals.&nbsp; "Connecticut's housing policies have failed our communities for decades, offering little support for local control or economic growth. We need a collaborative approach that empowers towns and cities to achieve their own housing goals,” said Simmons. “As State Senator for the 36th District, I will champion smart, action-oriented policies that prioritize local authority and support communities in shaping their housing futures." Simmons’ five-point plan includes:<ol><li>Introducing Common Sense Legislation: 8-30g is clearly not working in its current form. Any policy that takes the power away from towns to determine their own housing futures is a flawed approach. But many Republican proposals in the legislature redefine income limits entirely and reclassify what units constitute as affordable, neither of which will build enough housing to help our state’s economy grow. Nick will focus on amending 8-30g to make it easier for communities to provide input on developments and ensure alignment with their vision for community development.</li><li>More State Funding: The state should invest more funding to help towns realize their own self-determined housing plans. The funding will be directed towards towns that have crafted their own substantive housing plans developed by the community. Nick will continue to unlock more funding for the 36th District to increase housing production while lowering overall costs.</li><li>Lowering Costs: Building housing is expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Several new building materials (e.g. mass timber) exist that<a href="https://fas.org/publication/update-building-codes-to-use-mass-timber/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> are faster to build and result in lower overall construction costs</a>, all while lowering carbon emissions from construction. Nick will work with the Governor and the Legislature to support the increased adoption of these materials while seeking alternative faster construction methods that will defray costs. While Republican legislative proposals will ultimately constrict development and put upward pressure on housing prices, Nick will focus on real solutions that will lower development costs.</li><li>Cutting Red Tape and Streamlining Approvals: Nick will work with municipalities on implementing new streamlined approval processes. This would include creating one-stop permitting shops and special review teams for smaller residential projects. We should also allow for concurrent review and self-certification–all geared toward cutting red tape so that developers don’t pass delay costs onto residents. Republicans have proposed that the Department of Housing should conduct a study on streamlining the review of building permit applications; legislation that ultimately received no support. Studies take time and are often suggested because ideas are not on the table.</li><li>Supporting Local Housing Plans: Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan and other towns across our state have already generated great ideas that will move the needle on housing. Ideas include updating building zone regulations to promote more workforce housing through inclusionary zoning, inventorying public land that could be offered to Housing Authorities, updating elderly and affordable accessory housing requirements, and encouraging subsidized housing in areas served by transit. This isn't just a win for our team—it's a big step toward a future where we work together across party lines for the best interests of everyone in our community.Raised by a moderate Republican dad and a liberal Democratic mom, I've always believed in the power of seeing all sides and working together. This decision is set to reshape the landscape of environmental, healthcare, and various other regulations across the nation, potentially slowing down progress on urgent issues facing our communities.On the same day, the Court also narrowed the scope of a key federal obstruction law, which throws into question the cases of hundreds of January 6th defendants—disregarding one of the worst attacks on our democracy in recent history.And just last Monday, in a historic decision, a divided Supreme Court ruled that former presidents can never be prosecuted for actions relating to the core powers of their office. This marks an alarming shift in executive power—and is dangerous for the rule of law.These decisions collectively signal a troubling direction, where the protective reach of our judiciary may no longer suffice to safeguard democracy.&nbsp;Decisions like these underscore the indispensable role of our state and local governments to uphold democratic values. As a parent and a former teacher, I know that when it comes to gun violence, the most vulnerable among us pay the greatest price. Bump stocks will recklessly put lives at risk. It is morally inexcusable to dismantle our gun safety laws. So let’s be clear. This decision allows semi-automatic rifles to fire at a rate of hundreds of rounds per minute. This directly threatens the safety of our neighborhoods and schools. It’s a win for the gun lobby and utterly disregards the safety of our children. <h2>Nick Simmons Announces Five-Point Plan to Fix Housing in CT’s 36&nbsp;</h2>Today, Nick Simmons, candidate for CT-36 State Senate seat, announced a five-point plan to improve Connecticut’s housing laws. This includes amending 8-30g to allow for greater community input, advocating for more state funds, lowering development costs, and streamlining approval processes. Most importantly, Simmons believes that fixing the housing issues requires empowering local towns and cities to achieve their individual housing goals.&nbsp;

<h2>(2) Absentee Ballot</h2>Connecticut law allows you to <a href="https://portal.ct.gov/sots/election-services/voter-information/absentee-voting" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">receive an absentee ballot</a> if you cannot appear at your assigned polling place on Election Day because of: active service in the military, absence from the town in which you are eligible to vote, sickness, religious tenets that forbid secular activity on the day of the election, duties as an election official at a polling place other than your own during all of the hours of voting, or physical disability. To keep our communities strong, we need to keep them safe. And we can only do that by supporting our police and our firefighters.Nick believes that first responders need access to all the tools necessary to perform their duties effectively and safely. He will champion adequate funding and modern equipment to ensure their safety and effectiveness.But on-the-job resources aren’t enough. Our police and firefighters also deserve generous benefits for the hard work they do keeping our communities safe. Nick will advocate for fair wages, comprehensive benefits, and safe working conditions. This will help to increase recruitment and retention rates, both of which are critical to strong and capable firefighter and police forces.&nbsp; <h3>(1) POLICE</h3>Our police are the first line of defense for our safety and security. But <a href="https://www.ctinsider.com/politics/article/union-officials-warn-police-levels-25-percent-17829836.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Connecticut’s police staffing levels are down 25-30%</a>—which means longer response times, increased workloads, and greater risks to public safety. Nick will support bills to fund and expand programs for new police officers while also providing grants to a greater number of prospective cadets. He will also make sure that police receive the benefits they deserve—better pay, adequate healthcare, and improved working conditions. <h3>(2) FIREFIGHTERS</h3>Our district’s firefighters are under-equipped and under-resourced. <a href="https://turnto10.com/news/local/fire-east-greenwich-condo-building-ladder-trucks-equipment-safety-resources" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">This has resulted in dangerous conditions for firefighters and community members alike.</a> Nick will work to provide firefighters with state-of-the-art equipment, including expediting <a href="https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/greenwich-fire-truck-rtm-18442480.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the replacement of our aging ladder trucks</a>. He will also work with firefighters to address staffing shortages by improving recruitment and retention.&nbsp;Nick was also proud to be part of the Lamont administration when the Governor signed a bill banning the use of PFAS-containing firefighting foam. The administration also drafted a bill that expanded a 2019 law that expanded PTSD coverage for frontline workers and passed a groundbreaking law that makes it easier for firefighters with cancer to receive workers’ compensation. As State Senator, Nick will support legislation that improves the safety and mental health of our first responders.&nbsp;

<h2>Gun Safety Event Features Orange Shirts, Protesters and Disagreement over Policies</h2>Fazio’s Democratic opponent Nick Simmons in the 36th district, who also attended the event on Friday, said in an email that the issue of gun safety was personal for him and that he was disappointed in Senator Fazio’s vote against <a href="https://officeofthegovernor.cmail19.com/t/j-l-ehrekt-itjrhjkktk-u/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" style="color: rgb(197, 38, 38)">House Bill 6667</a>, An Act Addressing Gun Violence.

<h2>Ryan Fazio's Record Tells Us Who He Really Is</h2>

Nick believes that communities should have the autonomy to make their own housing decisions through local zoning. He will be a champion in the State Senate to protect local control for our towns.State housing policy works best when policymakers support towns through carrots, not sticks and when decisions are made bottoms-up not top-down. Nick was Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Lamont when the administration secured $800 million in new funding to support building new housing across the state. Funding like this paired with support from the Connecticut Department of Housing is exactly the kind of collaborative approach the state should be taking to help towns meet their housing goals.&nbsp;Nick will be an ally to our municipal leaders, advocating for their respective housing plans. It is the role of state leaders to champion the housing visions of our towns rather than impose top-down policies that result in overdevelopment.Nick believes that <a href="https://www.greenwichct.gov/1854/Affordable-Housing-Units-CT-Gen-Statute-" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Section 8-30g of the CT General Statutes</a> has failed and resulted in developers being able to construct large apartment complexes without sufficient town input and collaboration. He advocates for amending 8-30g to facilitate a more cooperative process that aligns with the specific needs of towns.As State Senator, Nick will support the execution and implementation of Greenwich’s Affordable Housing Plan, which aligns with Nick’s vision for our district. This includes balancing new development with sustainability, managing infrastructure issues like aging sewers and traffic congestion, and protecting open spaces and historic districts. Bringing together public and private organizations, as well as ensuring public engagement, are critical to the housing decision-making process.
